What changes in a properly converted basement

Many terraced and detached houses from the 1980s and 90s have a basement used only as a garage or store. We convert part of it into a gym, den or workshop and, where winters are cold, insulate floor and walls for year-round use (common in and around Barri del Castell, Barri del Sant Crist and Barri de la Cisa).

Where water gets in, we cut a perimeter channel under the slab leading to a sump with a pump and non-return valve. On the walls we fit a cavity drain membrane and a lining set away from the masonry.
