When should you switch to porcelain?

  • Cracked or hollow-sounding tiles
  • Worn terrazzo or old ceramic
  • You want one floor throughout
  • Slippery terrace floor

What porcelain tiling includes

  • Removing the old floor

We lift the existing floor, or tile over it if it is sound.

  • Levelling the base

Self-levelling compound wherever the screed is not flat.

  • Setting out the layout

Cuts and joints planned so the tiles look balanced in each room.

  • Double-spread adhesive

Flexible adhesive on floor and tile, with no voids underneath.

  • Large format, no lippage

Levelling clips keep big tiles perfectly flush.

  • Grout and skirting

Movement joints, grout in your chosen colour and matching skirting.

From old floor to porcelain in Girona

Town-centre flats in areas such as Barri Vell and Mercadal, mostly from the 1960s to 80s, still have terrazzo or ceramic tiles from the period. Where the base is sound, porcelain can go on top; if it sounds hollow, we lift it and level with self-levelling compound.

With large formats, increasingly requested in areas such as Eixample, Sant Narcís and Montilivi, adhesive goes on both the floor and the back of the tile, and we use levelling clips. That leaves no voids underneath and no lipping between neighbouring tiles.

More than 20 years in renovation help us foresee how each base will behave; the written quote breaks down every item. We work in nearby areas too: Salt, Sarrià de Ter and Sant Gregori.

Frequently asked questions

01

Porcelain floor tiling in Girona: which areas do you cover?

We work in Girona in areas such as Barri Vell, Mercadal, Eixample, Sant Narcís, Montilivi, Palau, Santa Eugènia and Can Gibert del Pla, and also nearby: Salt, Sarrià de Ter and Sant Gregori.

02

Can porcelain go over the old floor?

Often, yes, if the current floor is solid and flat. Door heights and thresholds with other rooms need checking, and we look at both during the visit.

03

What does large-format porcelain need?

A very flat base, double-spread adhesive and levelling clips. Big tiles mean fewer joints, but the setting out and cutting have to be more precise.

04

Can the same tile run from the living room to the terrace?

Only if the range has an outdoor non-slip version with the slip rating the CTE requires. Many collections offer both, so the floor can flow outside.
