Drains in the Eixample: what we find under the sinks
In older buildings in areas such as La Dreta de l'Eixample and L'Antiga Esquerra de l'Eixample, we still find lead waste pipes running under the floor to a shared trap, often flattened or furred with limescale. We replace them with PVC and a separate trap for each fixture, and join the communal stack without touching the neighbours' side.
If the basin gurgles when the bath empties, the problem is usually venting. In homes in areas such as La Nova Esquerra de l'Eixample and Sant Antoni, we give each fixture its own trap and, where the stack is poorly vented, add an air admittance valve hidden inside a unit.
