Basements in the Eixample: where the damp comes from
In areas such as La Dreta de l'Eixample and L'Antiga Esquerra de l'Eixample basements usually sit beneath older houses or under the ground floor of apartment buildings, with stone or brick walls against the soil and salt marks low down. Access is nearly always a narrow stair, so we carry materials down by hand and take rubble out in sacks.
Where water gets in, in basements in areas such as La Nova Esquerra de l'Eixample and Sant Antoni we cut a perimeter channel under the slab leading to a sump with a pump and non-return valve. On the walls we fit a cavity drain membrane and a lining set away from the masonry.
