In areas such as La Dreta de l'Eixample and L'Antiga Esquerra de l'Eixample many flats are in 19th or early 20th-century buildings, with Catalan vaults, timber beams and thick load-bearing walls. Before chasing any wall we check the beam ends and the areas under the bathroom and kitchen, where damp tends to collect.
When a salvageable encaustic tile floor turns up in areas such as La Nova Esquerra de l'Eixample and Sant Antoni, we clean it, relay loose tiles and polish it. If it cannot stay whole, we reuse the sound tiles in a single room or as a rug-style panel in the living room.
